Southwestern Oregon Community College, Indigenous Day 2021
Join Southwestern Oregon Community College and the Native Student Alliance Club as we host an Indigenous Day 2021 celebration on Monday October 11th 11:00am to 2:00pm. We will celebrate the culture and contributions of Indigenous people by learning about the history of some of our local Tribes on the Oregon Coast from Jesse Beers, the Cultural Stewardship Manager of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw, and from Robert Kentta, the Cultural Resource Director of the Confederated Tribe of Siletz. We will also learn from Peter Hatch how the Elakha Alliance is working to reintroduce Sea Otters. In addition to our wonderful speakers, we will enjoy the art and music of some contemporary Native artists: PAMYUA (Inuit "soul" Yupik), DJ Shub (Mohawk) ft Northern Cree Singers, Supaman ft Ashley Hall, and the Keauhou Band (Hawaiian). This free virtual Zoom event is open to all students and the public. For further information, you may contact Diana Kaljumagi, Native American Student Coordinator at diana.kaljumagi@socc.edu or (541)888-7271.
